Dunbar wanted to join the Canadian Air Force but discovered that he was colorblind and hence disqualified to be a pilot. He instead was a trainer, training other pilots to go out and fight.

Their son John remembers: They went to Niagara Falls first, then Buffalo, then Boston. In Buffalo they had a steak dinner under blue lights which made the food blue and they, or Dad at least, couldn't eat it.
