Notes from Catharine Heddle's discussions with Isabel:
Her mother's family lived in a house at the corner of Gerrard and Logan. Her mother (Ellen Rackstraw) moved back there after she and Aunt Isabel's father, Peter, separated. I think she (Nellie) lived then with her (Nellie's) brother Harry, whom Isabel liked. After her parents separated, Isabel continued to live with her father at 203 Silver Birch Avenue, five houses north of Pine, but would secretly visit her mother without his knowledge.
Harry (Grandpa-Jack's brother) was a teacher before he went into real estate. Eddie was in the "permanent army" (air force). He was three years older than Aunt Isabel. Aunt Eleanor was 15 years older than Aunt Isabel. Aunt Eleanor was like a mother to Isabel. Isabel remembers that every Sunday they would go for picnics along the Bluffs. She also remembers meeting Eleanor downtown, where she (Eleanor) worked as a secretary -- a good job. Harry and Eddie were close, but Grandpa-Jack was not as close with them. He was older and had left home early to go to work.
Isabel barely remembers her marriage to Merl Hornibrook, and doesn't remember or wouldn't say why it did not last. I believe they only stayed together for a few days after their marriage. She remained in the house they bought together, on Rodda Blvd, until she was over 80. I suppose they had an annulment? She did not say.
Isabel remembers her father as an extravagant man, and strict. She recalls that as a youngster (she was born in 1920), they had a projector in the basement so they could watch movies. She remembers some hardship during the depression but does not think it was as bad as others had it. She never had a bicycle, though, as her sister did. She went to the Balmy Beach School at Balsam and Beech.
Aunt Isabel worked at Bell Telephone for 33 years. Her starting salary was $18/week. She was happy there. |
