Forenames Charles William Maxwell
Surname Heddle
Activity Charles Heddle was born in Sierra Leone in 1812, the illegitimate son of John Heddle, surgeon and son of John Heddle, Town Clerk of Kirkwall, and of, probably, Sophy Bouchier, Heddle's native Sierria Leonean mistress. Charles Heddle, whose father died the year he was born, was educated in Kirkwall and Edinburgh, and returned to Sierra Leone to build up the business started there by his uncle Robert Heddle. He developed the business into one of the most successful concerns in the country, dealing in peanuts and running a shipping company with his own vessels. Having made a significant fortune, he retired to France in 1870 and died there in 1888 or soon after: he left his property to his second wife, who divided it with his son.
